Frequently Asked Questions

Want to learn about what Hillel at the University of Maryland looks like? Look no further!

The Rosenbloom Hillel Center (RHC) is Maryland Hillel’s new home. With a soft launch this spring semester, the new RHC will be the central hub for Jewish life on campus starting fall 2026, hosting Shabbat dinners, holidays, social events, leadership meetings, Israel programming, and more.

The RHC is located behind Landmark Apartments & next to Fraternity Row at 7505 Yale Ave, just steps from campus. It is easily walkable from many residence halls, especially those on South Campus.

Note: Google Maps may currently list the building as a Police Substation. We are actively working to update the name to Rosenbloom Hillel Center. Signage will be clearly visible once the building opens.

Our new building is in the final stages of construction. If you are planning a visit during February, Maryland Hillel will continue to host meetings and conversations at our current location, 7612 Mowatt Lane. You are more than welcome to join us there, though please note that this is the final semester Hillel will operate out of this building. Once the Rosenbloom Hillel Center opens, all tours and visits will transition to our new location on Yale Avenue, giving you a preview of the future of Maryland Hillel. You may sign up for a tour here.

Meal Plan registration for the fall semester does not open until the summer, but feel free to check out the current plans available to understand pricing (subject to change). All students living in an on-campus dorm are required to choose the Hillel Platinum or regular UMD dining plan.

Can we purchase individual meals at Hillel?

Yes, you can! You can purchase meals for $17.99 at the door. We accept cash, and credit/debit
cards!

FreshFest is Maryland Hillel’s premier orientation program for new Jewish students at the University of Maryland. Taking place just before regular move-in begins in August, FreshFest helps students: Meet other incoming Jewish students, get comfortable navigating campus, learn about Jewish life, Hillel, and student opportunities and build friendships before classes start.

Registration will open early May.

Dates: August 26–28, 2026

The Prospective Student Shabbaton is a special weekend experience for admitted and prospective students to visit campus, experience a traditionally observant Shabbat weekend and connect with current students.

Dates: March 27–29, 2026

Yes. During the fall housing selection process, students can rank the dorms they would like to live in and indicate that they would like to live near Hillel on their housing form.

Additional hall available for freshmen women
Women who would like to live close to Hillel may also select Cecil Hall (South Hill), an all-women’s residence hall located approximately 9 minutes from the RHC.

Housing options depend on the specific program. While some scholars or living-learning programs allow students to request housing near Hillel, students who do not make a request will be assigned to their program’s designated residence. Other programs require all participants to live in their assigned building with no exceptions. Please review your program’s housing policies carefully and plan accordingly.

If you are interested in finding a Jewish roommate, you can complete our Nice Jewish Roommate matching form. You’ll be asked to share a few details about your preferences and living style, and your information will be added to a shared list so you can connect with other students who are also looking for roommates.

Maryland Hillel has a professional staff of more than 10 team members dedicated to supporting Jewish students in meaningful and personal ways. Our goal is to help every student grow Jewishly in their own way.

When you arrive on campus, a one of the members of our Student Life Team will reach out to invite you for coffee and take the time to get to know your story. From there, they’ll help you explore next steps that feel right for you (there are no wrong answers). If you’re interested in leadership, they can introduce you to the many ways to get involved through our 20+ student groups. If you prefer to simply show up and be part of the community, they’ll make sure you’re invited to events and connected with like-minded students! There are so many more ways to get involved, but this is just a little taste to help you on your way
